HP has chosen to name their high-end laptop series after envy – the mortal sin. But does the HP Envy 14 live up to the name? Until a few years ago, this delicious design among notebooks was something you could only pluck in the apple orchard, and people with a penchant for Windows had to look far for great design.
Fortunately, things are improving on that front. HP has been looking over the fence to find inspiration for their Envy-series–there can certainly not be any doubt there, but it is not just a replica of Apple’s computers.
The casing is made of a mixture of aluminum and magnesium, giving away a feeling of quality. It feels exceptionally sturdy, like it can withstand anything. It also means that the weight reaches above 5lbs, however.
The screen is a chapter in itself. It is light, delicious and crisp and has a resolution of up to 1.600×900, which should satisfy most users. It also has dual graphics cards. This means that it can switch between a relatively weak graphics card meant for saving power, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 card with 1GB of RAM, which can be used when there is a need for serious graphics horsepower.
Another cool detail is that you can choose to boot a mini operating system, where you can go online, look at pictures, use Skype and so on. The small operating system starts up in a few seconds.
